| | Josh Ritter--The Animal Years | ] | Hope everyone had a good Labour Day this year. You guys know I *live* for three-day weekends because...I can TRAVEL! This holiday took me to Tuscon, AZ to see friends and fellow SCO grads Carla and Emilio. Natually, I lived up to my epithet of Picture Whore. :) Click below to see...

| | String Cheese Incident--Take Five | ] | Ah, LiveJournal, it's been too long. I got caught up in that addictive MySpace. I swear, it's the Space sucks you in and before you know it, you're like "real world? whaaa?" But not ot fear, for I have pictures, and posting pictures always brings me back to the lj. So I went to Bonnaroo. Yes yes. Best thing I've ever done. The lineup was spectacular, the weather was nice though hot, and the feeling of comradery was overwhelming. The lineup is at http://www.bonnaroo.com/2006/ but you may not want to look at it, cause you will kick your own ass for not going. And now for the money shots. There are lots of them.

| | Talib Kweli--the Beautiful Struggle | ] | So one of the techs got a McDonald's asian chicken salad for lunch the other day, and it came with one of these. I laughed so hard I may have peed a little. It reminded me of those "healthy lifestyles include quitting smoking" inserts that come in Marlboro/Camel packs. It's like the companies know that we know that we should not be consuming their product. Of course, you can only read the insert/obtain the fitness CD after you've purchased the product. Nothing like a good guilt trip to go along with your vice.
I've found myself completely aggrivated with the food industry lately. Obesity has now surpassed cigerette smoking as the number one cause of life-threatening illness in the United States. Why are we so quick to point out that cigerette smokingis so terrible, yet we'll wolf down a Big Mac and fries without thinking twice? Let's face it, smoking has a stigma that surrounds it (as it probably should) that makes you think that person is just inviting health problems on themselves. That's true. So why don't we think the same thing about the guy in the next booth that ordered the double pork-chop dinner with extra gravy? We don't think less of him. We don't go up to him and say "are you an idiot? Don't you know that that stuff will kill ya?" Many people think smoking is wrong. Why aren't cheeseburgers wrong? Many people think Marlboro/Phillip Morris are evil businesses that sell a terrible product that kills you. Why don't we think the same thing about KFC/Burger King/McDonalds? Their products cause just as many health problems as smoking when consumed on a regular basis.
I was really tripped out when the owner of Domino's Pizza Tom Monaghan wanted to build a catholic city in Florida. This city, dubbed Ave Maria, will ban abortions, pornography, and contraceptives from inside it's limits. I'm sure there will be plenty of yummy artery-clogging pizza to consume, though (no word on whether cigarettes will be sold). Many Christians think that smoking is wrong because it harms your body. Well so does Domino's. Your body is a temple, right? God wouldn't want you ruining your body with smoking, having the knowledge that it is harmful, right? God also says not to consume shrimp (Leviticus 11:10), it's an abomination. I don't know why. Maybe it's the cholesterol content *lol*
I know you're thinking "geez Beth, calm down. You can choose not to smoke, but you can't choose not to eat. You gotta eat. You don't gotta smoke." Excellent point. You absolutely can choose not to smoke. You can also choose to not eat crap with no nutritional value three meals a day.
This is not meant to be directed at anyone. I know you guys are smart and don't eat a Hardee's biscuit for breakfast, a Number 2 from Mickey D's for lunch, and then pick up a pizza from Pizza Hut on the way home from work. But many people do. Lots of my patients do. It's quick, convenient, and yummy. But it's killing them. Just like smoking.
I eat bad things occaisionally. I smoke occaisionally. Moderation is the key.
*climbs down off of soapbox*
Whew.
Just needed to rant. You may all go about your normal day. :) |

| | Ladytron--The Last One Standing | ] | *sigh* Alcohol. Wonderful, glorious alcohol. How did I live for 19ish years without thee? You come in so many sapid flavors, each suited to perfectly compliment any mood. Oh, eraser of minds, your deletable piquancy propels me in to an altered state of consciousness with such exquisite artistry.
I'm having a beer. Stella. It's been that kind of day. No one at work is getting along, which seems to coincidentally occur for about 3-4 days each month. Hmmmm. 19 employees, 18 of which are female. There's possibly some kind of strange connnection here? Anyway, one of the receptionist girls said to me today "you don't know what it's like to have everyone mad at you because of the schedule" when I commented on her mood, to which I replied "Hun, if you wanna have a debate about who has the more stressful job here, I'll be happy to go head-to head with you on that one." The problem is I'm the 3rd youngest out of these 18 employees, so I think it irks some of them to have to call me Doctor. Some of the technicians have been doing their technician thing since I was in the 4th grade, and yet they have to take orders from me. *shrug* oh well. That's the way it is. I'm always telling them "If you don't like it, that's cool. Just apply to Optometry school in Memphis or Philidelphia, move away, go to school for 4 solid years, dedicate yourself to the 22 hours of post-graduate work you'll be doing each semester, see your family 2-3 times a year, graduate, move back, and then you don't have to listen to me." I'm such a bitch *lol*
Made it home for Easter this year. First time in 4 years at least. Not that Easter is a big deal around my household, but it was just nice to go home and chill. Got to see Carrie, Lori, and Matt, which was also cool. I was at Matt's house until 1 am Saturday night chasing a mouse around the spare bedroom. Ah, good times. Matt and Logan wanted to kill it (heathens), to which I responded "NO! ARE YOU MAD???", so we preceeded to try to coax it into his aunt's hatbox. Mouse is now safe in the woods by Matt's house, hopefully not becoming snake food. Now that's what you call a Statesville Saturday night. :)
So I got my tax refund and my bonus from work about the same time, and I can't decide if I want to spend some of it on a Gameboy or XM satellite radio. It's just not right to spend refunds/bonuses on practical things. If I had a paid account, I'd poll you guys and make you choose one, but I don't bacause I'm just cheap like that. Any other suggestions on impractical overpriced gadgetry is greatly appreciated. |
